What is it?
A crown or a 'cap' is a covering that fits over a prepared tooth.

They can be made from different materials which include the all porcelain, the porcelain bonded to precious metal and the gold alloy crown. Which type is appropriate will depend upon strength requirements and aesthetic concerns of the tooth involved.

Why would we recommend a crown?
It may be necessary to restore a tooth with a crown because the tooth may be broken, weakened by decay or a very large filling or a root canal filling.

Crowns therefore strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure and can also be used to improve the appearance of your teeth. A crown may also be advised to help hold a denture in place.

What is involved?
Restoring a tooth with a crown requires two visits.

During the first visit, the tooth is prepared, photos and a shade map is recorded for the tooth, an impression or mould is taken and a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it whilst the crown is being made.

At the subsequent visit, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is cemented or bonded into place.
