Root Canal Treatment

What is it?
Root canal treatment (RCT), also known as endodontics, can help save a damaged tooth.

When the blood or nerve supply of the tooth or the 'pulp' is infected due to decay, exposure of the pulp from a deep restoration or injury, the infection may spread through the root canal system of the tooth and may eventually lead to an abscess.

This inflamed area in which pus collects can cause swelling of the tissues around the tooth, causing symptoms ranging from a dull ache to severe tooth ache. If RCT is not carried out, the only alternative to alleviate the pain and remove the infection is to have the tooth removed.

What does it involve?

The aim of the treatment is to remove all the infection from the root canal. To do this, the root canal is cleaned using files and then filled to prevent further infection.

The whole process can take several visits in more difficult situations, however at London Smile Studio we use the latest techniques and equipment to ensure that this procedure is completed as efficiently and as painlessly as possible, and often within one visit.

What happens afterwards?
Following RCT, we recommend the tooth be restored using a composite material, not necessarily for the aesthetics but for the strength it will provide the tooth due to its bonding properties.

Since the tooth is no longer living, it tends to be more brittle than a living tooth so it may be necessary to restore the tooth with a crown at a later date to provide extra support to the tooth, especially those carried out on the back chewing teeth.
